Sacred Motifs No. 01

Golden Spiral

The spiral has long fascinated me. It suggests movement, growth and continuity, qualities echoed in nature.

In the original book cover, I wanted the circular form to feel as though it were turning. The irregularities are deliberate, giving the geometry a sense of life.

The motif also carries a personal idea: how health, performance and wealth can compound over time, and the importance of preserving what matters.

Translated into wool, that idea gains texture, softness and depth. The image becomes something experienced through the body and in relation to a space.

“The spiral grows. The outer form keeps everything together.”

Three intentions

Movement

A turning, continuous form that introduces a sense of visual rhythm.

Line drawing of uneven crystal facets, the Irregularity intention of the Sacred Motifs rugs

Irregularity

Intentional departures from perfect geometry create a more organic expression.

Materiality

Wool gives the motif another sensory dimension through pile, texture and softness.

Every detail has an intention.

Designing for Health and Wealth by Ozge Fettahlioglu, the book whose cover became the Golden Spiral

The story

Some things gather meaning long before they find a home.

“My neck hurts! I can't stop reading your book.” That was Yuna Khatri, founder of Lila Rugs, on reading Designing for Health and Wealth. Then she asked: why don't we make your book cover our first rug?

The drawing travelled from Australia to Nepal, where women artisans began bringing the Golden Spiral to life in wool. While the samples were being made, devastating floods struck Nepal. For a while, the rug hardly mattered, and it was a relief to hear everyone involved was safe.

When the samples arrived, Ozge Fettahlioglu realised the spiral had begun doing something she hadn't designed it to do. It was gathering people. A book had connected two designers. A drawing had connected people across countries.

“I designed the spiral to show how the things that matter can accumulate and be held together. I never expected the rug itself to begin gathering so much before it had even found a home.”

The book that inspired the first rug

Why wool

My work in neuroarchitecture asks how the built environment influences the way we feel, think and live. That curiosity extends to the materials and objects we encounter every day.

“Wool interests me for its natural origin, tactile character, resilience and physical qualities. Through Sacred Motifs, these attributes become part of the design process rather than a finishing consideration.”

Designed for more than the eye.
