An architect should bring a neuroarchitecture consultant onto a hotel project at concept stage, before the room layout, the window orientation, the acoustic separation, the services zoning and the lighting circuits are fixed, because those are the variables the evidence actually speaks to and they are set by the architecture, not by the finishes. Brought in after development approval, a neuroarchitecture consultant can only work on materials, colour and furniture, which is where the evidence is weakest. What is neuroarchitecture, and what is it not?
Neuroarchitecture applies findings from neuroscience and environmental psychology to the design of buildings: how light, acoustics, thermal conditions, spatial proportion, views and materials affect stress, sleep, attention and behaviour. The field has an institutional home in the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture, founded in San Diego in 2003, of which the studio’s founder is a member. It is a research-informed method, not a style, and it does not license any claim that a particular finish produces a particular guest outcome. A 2025 review in the journal Buildings by Attaianese, Barilà and Perillo maps what the literature supports and where it is thin; we cite it because an architect should know the limits before a client is told anything. Which decisions are fixed by the architecture?
- Acoustic separation. The mass, sealing and decoupling that decide whether a guest hears the corridor and the next room are set at layout and construction stage. The National Construction Code’s Part F7 requires walls between sole-occupancy units to achieve Rw + Ctr 50 and walls to corridors Rw 50; AS/NZS 2107 recommends 30 to 35 dB(A) in sleeping rooms. No finish recovers a wall without acoustic mass.
- Daylight and darkness. Window orientation, glazing and the reveal depth decide morning light and how a blackout system can return to the wall. Robbins and colleagues (2020) and Mao, Yang and Wang (2018) both place light among the strongest predictors of hotel sleep.
- Services zoning. The in-room air conditioning unit’s position, noise and cycling, and the thermostat the guest can reach, are mechanical design decisions. A noisy air conditioner was the strongest single predictor of poor sleep in the Robbins survey.
- Lighting circuits. Warm bedside light at 2700K or below with dimming is a circuit and switching decision. Exposure to ordinary room light before bed suppresses melatonin onset (Gooley et al., 2011); the circuits cannot be retrofitted after construction without opening walls.
- Proportion and views. Room depth, ceiling height and what the bed faces are architectural; the biophilic evidence with the most support concerns views to nature and daylight rather than decorative pattern.
What does the consultant add at each stage?
Concept and brief. A guest-experience brief that translates the operator’s segment and the site into measurable targets: sound levels, darkness at bed height, light temperature and control, thermal control, sensory load at the bed, and the views each room type gets. Design development. Review of the room types against those targets while the plan is still open, and coordination with the acoustic, mechanical and lighting engineers so the targets reach their specifications. Documentation. The interior and FF&E package, with standards evidence per item and a prototype room to test the whole. After opening. Measurement of the property’s own review scores, sleep and noise themes and rate against its pre-opening baseline, with the limits of attribution stated. What can the evidence support, and what can it not?
It supports designing for sleep: the guest surveys agree on noise, bedding, light and temperature, and the physiology of light and melatonin is established. It supports the value of daylight and views. It does not support claims that a specific palette, material or pattern produces a measured commercial outcome in a hotel; those studies are few, small and often funded by manufacturers, and we say so. How does the collaboration work in practice?
The architect holds the architectural commission and the building contract interface.
