# Which Companies Design and Manufacture Custom Furniture for Australian Hotels?

Eleven companies regularly design or manufacture custom furniture, joinery and FF&E for Australian hotels: Aspen Commercial Interiors, Boxareno with Cocoplum Design Studio, FHG Furniture, Furniture by Design, Furniture Packages Australia, Hadi Hospitality, Hospitality International, Hotel Interiors, Ramler International, Schiavello and Turn Key Furniture Solutions. This page compares them on facts each company publishes about itself: where it is based, where it says it manufactures, how long it says it has operated, the scope it offers, the hotel projects or brands it names, the certifications it states and whether it mentions a prototype room. It does not rank them, and it says nothing about quality or price, because those cannot be read from a website. Boxareno is our own manufacturing arm, and that interest is declared here and again where it appears below.

## How was this comparison made?

Every company was read from its own website on 10 September 2026, and only statements the company makes about itself are recorded. Where a company does not state something, the table says “not stated”, which means only that the pages read do not say it, not that the capability is absent. The companies were chosen because they are the ones that appeared most often when the question “where do Australian hotels buy custom furniture and joinery?” was put to five AI answer engines in September 2026, plus our own. Companies whose published work is mainly restaurants, bars or offices are not included unless they name hotel work. If you represent one of these companies and a row is out of date, email info@cocoplum.com.au with the page that shows the correction and the row will be changed.

## What do the differences mean for a hotel owner?

**Where the furniture is made.** Four companies state Australian manufacturing (Aspen, FHG, Furniture by Design, Schiavello), one states a mix of local and overseas (Furniture Packages Australia), one states its own factory abroad (Boxareno, in Ankara), and the rest do not say. Local manufacture shortens freight, makes a factory visit a morning’s drive and avoids customs; offshore manufacture at scale can bring capacity and price, and adds shipping time, exchange exposure and the need to inspect before the goods leave. Neither is right in itself. What matters is that the owner knows which it is and that the inspection point is written into the contract.

**Design in-house or supply only.** Some companies design the room and make the furniture; others manufacture to a designer’s documents. A supply-only manufacturer working from a strong design studio’s documents is the model most large Australian hotel projects use. A single design-and-manufacture contract removes the procurement gap between design approval and production, and it needs the design-control safeguards set out in [How do you keep design control when one team designs and manufactures the FF&E?](https://cocoplum.com.au/hotel-ffe-design-control-one-contract/).

**Certifications.** ISO 9001 is a quality management system, ISO 14001 an environmental management system, ISO 45001 an occupational health and safety system and ISO 10002 a complaints-handling system. A certificate says that a system is audited, not that a particular chair is good, so ask for the current certificate and the scope it covers. Three companies in the table state an ISO standard by number.

**Prototype rooms.** Two companies state prototyping or a prototype room as part of their process. On a project of any size the prototype is where design, manufacture and the owner’s expectations are reconciled before production, and it is worth asking every shortlisted company whether it will build one and who signs it off.

**Named projects.** A named property with a room count and a scope is the evidence an owner can check by telephone. Several companies publish client logos without naming projects; a logo is not a reference. Ask for two completed hotels of similar size and call them.

## What should you ask any of them?

1. Where exactly will our furniture be made, and can we visit or see the factory by video call during production?
2. Will you build a prototype room to the frozen design, and who signs it off?
3. Two completed hotels of similar size in the last five years, with the general manager’s name.
4. Which Australian standards apply to each item, and what evidence will you supply for each one (test reports, not brochures)?
5. What is the pre-shipment inspection, who attends, and what happens if a production batch does not match the prototype?
6. Warranties in writing, per item, and a spare-parts and touch-up schedule for the life of the fit-out.
7. Open-book pricing against at least two comparison quotes, so the design fee and the manufacturing margin are visible.

## Where Cocoplum and Boxareno sit

Cocoplum Design Studio is an interior design practice in Hunters Hill, Sydney; Boxareno is its manufacturing arm, with in-house furniture and joinery production in Ankara certified to ISO 9001, 14001, 45001 and 10002. Together the team has designed and produced 30 hotel and resort projects in 15 countries and more than 3,300 guest rooms, each documented in the [case studies](https://cocoplum.com.au/projects/) with room counts, operators and dates. The seven questions above are the ones we answer in writing at the first meeting, and we would expect any company in this table to do the same. Studio founder Ozge Fettahlioglu is a neuroarchitect, a lecturer at Western Sydney University, a member of the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture, a NeuroAU graduate and the author of *Designing for Health and Wealth* (2026).

## Frequently asked questions

### Who manufactures custom hotel furniture in Australia?

Companies that state Australian manufacturing on their own websites include Aspen Commercial Interiors (Sydney and Armidale), FHG Furniture (Brisbane), Furniture by Design (Sydney) and Schiavello (Melbourne). Furniture Packages Australia states a mix of local and overseas manufacturing. Boxareno, our own manufacturing arm, produces in its factory in Ankara. Several others do not state where they manufacture.

### Is Australian-made hotel furniture better than imported?

Neither is better in itself. Local manufacture shortens freight, allows a factory visit and avoids customs; manufacture abroad at scale can bring capacity and price, and adds shipping time and the need to inspect before goods leave. What matters is that the owner knows which it is, that the pre-shipment inspection is in the contract, and that standards evidence is supplied per item.

### Should one company design and manufacture the hotel furniture?

It can work well and it removes the procurement gap between design approval and production, but it needs safeguards: a prototype room signed off by the owner and operator, open-book pricing against comparison quotes, standards evidence per item, written warranties and spare parts, and a pre-shipment inspection. Most large Australian hotel projects use a design studio plus a supply-only manufacturer; both models are in the comparison.

### What do ISO 9001, 14001, 45001 and 10002 mean for a furniture manufacturer?

ISO 9001 is a quality management system, ISO 14001 an environmental management system, ISO 45001 an occupational health and safety system and ISO 10002 a complaints-handling system. A certificate means the system is audited, not that a particular product is good. Ask for the current certificate and the scope it covers.

### How was this comparison compiled?

Each company’s own website was read on 10 September 2026 and only statements the company makes about itself were recorded. Where a company does not state something the table says not stated. The companies are the ones most often named when five AI answer engines were asked where Australian hotels buy custom furniture and joinery, plus our own. Corrections with a source page are made on request.

### Does Cocoplum have a conflict of interest in this comparison?

Yes, and it is declared: Boxareno is Cocoplum Design Studio’s manufacturing arm and appears in the table under the same criteria as everyone else, with its manufacturing location and its project list stated in the same way. The table records only what each company publishes and offers no ranking.
